FAQ

Good records begin with good questions.

Straight answers about what RothFuel does, what families should document, and where professional guidance still matters.

Is a child too young to have a Roth IRA?+

Age by itself is generally not the deciding factor. A child needs eligible taxable compensation, and a parent or other adult typically opens and manages the custodial account until the applicable age of termination.

Does RothFuel decide whether income qualifies?+

No. RothFuel organizes the work and payment facts your family records and calculates an estimated contribution limit from approved gross earnings. Final taxable compensation must be reconciled with tax documents and the filed return.

Are gross earnings the same as IRA-eligible compensation?+

Not necessarily. For self-employment in particular, related business expenses and tax adjustments may reduce the net earnings that support an IRA contribution. RothFuel's estimate does not make those tax determinations.

Can a parent provide the money for the contribution?+

Generally, the contribution dollars can come from a parent or another person, while the contribution limit still depends on the child's eligible compensation and applicable IRA rules. Individual tax considerations can vary.

Do contributions from different people or accounts have separate limits?+

No. Contributions made by the child or anyone else count together, and the annual limit generally applies across all traditional and Roth IRAs owned by the child. Coordinate contributions outside RothFuel before relying on its estimated available contribution.

What should we record for an odd job?+

Record the service performed, dates, hours or quantity when relevant, the rate or flat amount, who paid, how and when payment arrived, and a reference or note that helps explain the transaction.

Can routine household chores count?+

Payments within a family deserve careful scrutiny. The work should be genuine, age-appropriate, documented, and paid at a reasonable rate; ordinary family responsibilities may not create taxable earned income. Ask a qualified tax professional about your facts.

Does my child need to file a tax return?+

It depends on the type and amount of income and the rules for that year. Self-employment can trigger filing or self-employment tax obligations at different thresholds than wages, so check current IRS guidance.

When can a contribution be made?+

A contribution can generally be made during the tax year or by that year's tax-return due date, not including extensions. A timely contribution made after year-end must be designated for the intended tax year, which is why RothFuel records both the contribution date and designated year.

Does RothFuel open, hold, or invest the IRA?+

No. RothFuel is a separate recordkeeping layer. The child owns the custodial Roth IRA, an adult custodian manages it, and the chosen financial institution holds the account and investments. RothFuel does not move money or connect to the account.

Where can a family open a custodial Roth IRA?+

RothFuel's guide links to Schwab and Fidelity as two unaffiliated examples that currently describe custodial Roth IRA offerings. They are not endorsements or a complete list, and families should compare current fees, minimums, investments, and transfer procedures.

Can money come out before retirement?+

Regular Roth contributions can generally be withdrawn without income tax or an early-distribution penalty, but conversions and investment earnings follow more complicated ordering, tax, penalty, and five-year rules. Taking money out also gives up future tax-advantaged growth.

What happens if an approved earning changes?+

RothFuel removes the edited earning from approved calculations until an adult reviews and approves it again. The audit trail preserves the lifecycle.

What happens when the custodial account ends?+

The custodian transfers control according to the account agreement and applicable state law. The relevant age and process vary, so confirm them with the financial institution.

Is my family's information shared across accounts?+

No. RothFuel treats each family as a separate tenant. Server-side authorization and family-scoped relationships are designed to keep one family's data from being accessed through another family.

A note on tax questions

RothFuel provides educational recordkeeping tools, not tax, legal, or investment advice. Rules and limits change, and each family's facts are different. Consult current IRS guidance and a qualified professional when needed.
